Lack of time prevented all but a cursory investigation of the forests on spilites and basalts at Pulot 'Tres' (fig. 16, locality 45) and on the limestone at Quezon (fig. 17 - 18, localities 46 - 47). Sightings of very large Terminalia copelandii, Koompasia excelsa and many Kleinhovia hospital indicated the presence of a completely different flora from the rest of Palawan, biologically more closely related to the forests of north Borneo than to those of other Philippine islands. Canopy height, at 30 - 35 m, was higher than seen elsewhere and emergents grew to 40 - 45 m. A new Durio sp. has recently been described from this region. Ficus pustulata was found here.
Also observed, was that the forests of Mt. Mantalingajan, the only well collected upland area in South Palawan, were completely different from those not occurring on ultrabasic soils. Even through field-glasses, the grey-green, even-canopied forests with widely-spread trees of Mt. Mantalingajan were in sharp contrast to the varied bright greens of very irregular-canopied forest on the spilites and basalts of the surrounding mountains to the west.
