Palawan originally had 38 palms recorded and the expedition added a further 16 species (a 42% increase!), one of which was a new species and is endemic to Palawan, and another a new subspecies of rattan from the lowland rainforest of the St. Pauls Bay National Park. The figures after the expedition were that Palawan had:
- 52 species of palm of which
- 6 were endemic to the Philippines
- 12 endemic to Palawan.
Once again, Palawan is a very special island from the point of view of diversity and endemism.
Korthalsia rigida is called "Yas-Yas" locally due to ants banging their abdomens on the leaf sheaths when the rattan is touched by something. The sound is similar to yas-yas-yas-yas.........
